A Practical Approach to Couples Therapy

Brandi Tarver MA, LPC, LMFT is certified in the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy. The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman to apply the insights gained from their research to the task of helping couples.

Over the past 40 years, they have studied thousands of couples. From their research, we now know how to help couples have successful relationships and how to understand and avoid relationship pitfalls.

This approach is a practical one that couples can immediately relate to and apply to their relationship. It is a form of couples' therapy that makes sense. Unhappy, conflicted couples can learn the skills and attitudes which make for happy, successful relationships.

Schedule Your Initial Assessment

Couples who enter into Gottman Method of Couples Therapy begin with an assessment process that then informs the therapeutic framework and intervention. As a Certified Gottman Therapist, it is imperative that I thoroughly understand your relationship to be effective in helping to make necessary changes to improve the quality of your relationship.

During this initial assessment phase, we will start with a conjoint session. This session will then be followed by an individual session with each partner. Couples also complete an online questionnaire, then receive detailed feedback on their relationship in the fourth session. This session provides insight into the focus of therapy and the plan for moving forward.

Therapeutic Interventions

Therapeutic interventions are designed to help couples strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management and creation of shared meaning.

Couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen the emotional connection and create changes which enhance your shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed.

"I was referred to Brandi by some close friends who saw her help fix their marriage after an affair. I would have never believed that a relationship could look better after that until I had to see her work on my own marriage issues. She uses the Gottman Method, which is amazing. My husband even felt comfortable with therapy. I can honestly say thanks to her, our marriage is better than ever."
